Non-governmental organizations have played a big role in the international emergence of climate change-combatting efforts from the beginning. They played a role in the adoption of the Kyoto Protocol and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). In China, the emergence of NGOs specific to the efforts in reigning in the effects of climate change began in the early 1990s. The Friends of Nature was this first organization aimed at public education efforts for the effects of climate change. Since then, many more organizations have emerged as the topic of climate change has elevated in the minds of the citizens and the priorities of the national government. However, as compared to NGOs in other nations, the Chinese counterparts are still relatively new and thus provide an opportunity for comparison between them. Often, the Chinese NGOs in the international context are not given the same level of influence as compared to NGOs that were established many decades prior. The more interesting point that the author brought in the chapter is that domestically, Chinese NGOs still are a great architect for social and cultural change for the nation. It is to be expected that soon enough, these new Chinese NGOs will garner the same level of respect as their counterparts in other nations.
