With the new emergence of challenges related to basic needs and access to: food, water, and energy, sustainable sources of each of these needs to be the focus of nations around the world. The Philippines ranks in the top five countries at risk of the effects of climate variability in the past few decades. Namely, the country has routinely been impacted by catastrophic weather impacting the lives of its citizens. Geothermal energy is seen as the best opportunity for the nation to decrease its use of the current primary source of energy production: coal.
The Energy Development Corporation is a conglomerate whose main objective is to increase the use of geothermal technology in the Philippines. This past year, the EDC reported a carbon footprint of 790,000 carbon dioxide equivalent, effectively only one-fourth of the carbon absorption of the trees in the nation. While not a silver bullet, the unique geography of the nation provides great opportunity to harness available geothermal energy stores to reduce the needs of coal-fired power plants across the Philippines.
