China, Association of Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) jointly hosted the Symposium on Localization and Poverty Reduction for Sustainable Development in Siem Reap, Cambodia on March 21. It is the third year in a row that the three parties has organized a series of seminars on sustainable development. More than 170 delegates from China, ASEAN countries, and UN agencies, experts, scholars and media attended the seminar. Huang Xilian, Chinese ambassador to ASEAN, stressed for years that China and ASEAN are working together on poverty reduction, energy, environmental protection, climate change and disaster management. They have recognized that localization of sustainable development mechanism is an effective means of promoting poverty reduction and the fields of cooperation between China and ASEAN have expanded from the traditional fields of agriculture and water conservancy, bridge and road building, personnel training and medical services to the fields of economy, trade and tourism, green energy, cultural poverty alleviation, poverty monitoring and assessment, and environmental governance. The realization of sustainable development is an important goal of ASEAN community vision 2025, and also, the core content of the construction of "people-oriented" ASEAN community. The workshop is a convergence of the ASEAN vision 2025 and the UN 2030 agenda for sustainable development. In the conference, the UNDP also conveyed its willingness to convey assistance to China and ASEAN in mechanism innovation, public participation and monetary investment. As a result of the meeting, UNDP issued a special report, Localization of Sustainable Development Goals in ASEAN: Experiences in Policy Modeling and Implementation Paths.
