“Analysts are now predicting that wind and solar power will reach 50 percent of all electricity generation by 2050.” These figures are on a globalized scale, with the percentages of solar and wind power generation variable amongst all of the different nations. The report complies the findings from 65 researchers of the Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF). Amongst this top line finding related to the 50% projection of solar and wind adoption, they have also tracked pricing related the infrastructure surrounding renewable energy formats. For example, lithium-ion batteries have dropped in price by 80% in the last decade, allowing vast sums of battery farms to accompany solar and wind farms to store the energy not immediately consumed by the grid. BENF suggests that over $500 billion USD for investments in battery technologies and storage systems will allow for the introduction of a number of vast solar and wind farms in new developments. The estimations of just the decrease of the lithium battery cost will spur total renewable energy percentages in the EU to nearly 90%, over 62% in China, and half of the U.S. markets. These totals are projected for the year 2050. The researchers note that these actions alone will not solve the global climate change initiative of reducing the global temperature limit, and further initiatives of reducing greenhouse gas emissions must be paired with these projections to be wholly effective.
